Can ABA help a school-age child in Montgomery County?
Yes. ABA is not only for toddlers. For children in elementary school and beyond, goals often shift toward independence, conversation, handling frustration, following classroom routines and getting along with peers. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) assesses where your child is now, writes a treatment plan with measurable goals, and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works on them session by session.
Many Montgomery County families schedule ABA in the after-school hours at home. That timing lets your child practice homework routines, transitions from school to home and family expectations, the moments where many school-age kids struggle most.
Older children can also help shape their own goals. When it fits, your BCBA will ask your child what feels hard, whether that is making friends, managing big feelings or getting through homework, and build those priorities into the plan alongside yours. Children tend to work harder on goals they care about. To talk through what this could look like for your child, contact us for a free consultation and benefits check.

How does ABA work with my child's IEP?
In Pennsylvania, your school district evaluates school-age children and writes an Individualized Education Program (IEP). ABA through health insurance is separate from the IEP, and it does not replace school services. What it can do is support the same goals from a different angle.
With your written consent, your BCBA can talk with teachers, share data and align on strategies, so your child hears the same expectations at home and at school. Our School & Community-Based ABA program focuses on that carryover, which behavior analysts call generalization. Whether a therapist can work inside a school building is up to each school, so we coordinate first.
Why is social skills work such a big part of Montco plans?
Because for many school-age children, the hardest part of the day is not the lesson. It is lunch, recess, group projects and after-school activities. Our Social Skills Development program breaks those moments into teachable steps, practices them with an adult first, and then moves practice into real settings with peers or siblings.
Community sessions extend that work to places like stores and playgrounds when it fits the plan, and Parent Training & Support helps you coach the same skills on weekends and during family outings.
How do you measure progress for an older child?
The same way we do for any child: with data. Every goal in the treatment plan has a clear definition and a way to measure it, such as how many times your child starts a conversation, how long they can work before asking for a break, or how often a challenging behavior happens. Your RBT records that data during each session, and your BCBA reviews it to decide what to keep, change or move on from.
For school-age children, we also look at whether a skill shows up in new places and with new people. A child who can join a game with the therapist but not with a classmate has not finished that goal yet. Your BCBA will share progress with you in plain language, and the reviews feed into the reports your insurer needs to continue authorizing care.
Does insurance cover ABA in Montgomery County, PA?
Often, yes. Pennsylvania's Act 62 (2008) requires many state-regulated group health plans to cover autism diagnosis and treatment, including ABA, for people under 21. That age range matters for older children: coverage under Act 62 does not end when early childhood does. Self-funded employer plans follow federal rules instead, so we verify each plan for free.
We accept most major plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare. Pennsylvania's Medical Assistance program can also cover ABA through Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS); ask us whether we can bill your specific plan. Our center at 1939 NJ-70 in Cherry Hill is about 31 miles away, so In-Home ABA Therapy is the standard program for Montco families.

Frequently asked questions
Is my child too old for ABA?
Usually not. ABA is used with children of many ages, and goals simply change as children grow. For school-age kids, plans often target independence, social skills, emotional regulation and school routines rather than early language. Your BCBA will assess your child and recommend goals and hours that fit where they are today.
Can ABA sessions happen after school?
Yes, and for many Montgomery County families that is the most practical time. After-school sessions at home let your child work on homework routines, transitions and family expectations. Available time slots depend on therapist schedules in your area, so ask about current availability when you call.
Will your therapist come into my child's school?
Sometimes. Each school decides whether outside providers can work in the building, so we start by coordinating with you and the school team. Even when in-school sessions are not possible, your BCBA can share strategies and data with teachers, with your consent, to keep home and school working on the same goals.
What does a functional behavior assessment involve?
A BCBA observes your child, interviews you and sometimes teachers, and collects data on when challenging behavior happens and what follows it. The goal is to find out what the behavior does for your child, such as escaping a hard task or getting attention, and then teach a better way to meet that need.
Does Act 62 cover teenagers?
Act 62 requires many state-regulated group plans to cover autism diagnosis and treatment, including ABA, for people under 21. Whether your plan falls under Act 62 depends on how it is funded and regulated. Self-funded employer plans follow federal rules instead. We will check your specific benefits for free before you commit to anything.
What is the difference between a BCBA and an RBT?
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst holds a graduate degree and certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The BCBA assesses your child, writes and supervises the treatment plan and leads parent training. A Registered Behavior Technician is trained and credentialed through the same board and delivers most one-to-one sessions under the BCBA's supervision.
Could my child come to your center instead of doing ABA at home?
It is possible, but for most Montgomery County families it is not practical. Our only center, in Cherry Hill, is about 31 miles away, and full-day center-based ABA works best for children who can attend consistently. Home and community sessions usually fit school-age schedules better. If a center day interests you, ask and we will talk it through honestly.
