Can ABA help my child at school in Haddonfield?

Yes. Some of the most important goals for school-age children happen during the school day: following group directions, handling transitions between subjects, joining recess games and asking for a break instead of shutting down. Our School & Community-Based ABA service brings clinical support into those moments.

In New Jersey, your school district's Child Study Team evaluates students and writes the IEP. ABA through your health insurance is a separate service, but the two work better together. With your consent and the district's approval, our BCBA can observe, share data and suggest strategies that teachers can use, so your child hears the same expectations in class and in therapy.

Every district handles outside providers differently, so the first step is a conversation. We explain to the school team what an RBT or BCBA would actually do in the room, how data is shared and how support would fade as your child becomes more independent.

What does community-based ABA look like?

Community sessions take learning out of the therapy room. Depending on your child's goals, an RBT might practice waiting in line, ordering at a counter, crossing a street safely or staying with a parent in a busy store. Each outing has a specific target written into the treatment plan, and the RBT collects data the whole time.

This is where generalization happens. A child who can greet a peer in a structured session still needs practice doing it in an unpredictable place. Short, planned outings build that confidence a step at a time.

Haddonfield's walkable downtown and neighborhood streets make useful practice settings because outings can be short and repeated often. Your BCBA chooses places and times that match your child's current skills, then gradually raises the challenge.

How does ABA build social skills for older kids?

Social goals change as children grow. For a preschooler it may be sharing a toy; for an older child it is joining a conversation, reading tone or handling losing a game. Our Social Skills Development program breaks these into teachable pieces, models them, practices them in role-play and then tries them with real peers.

Reinforcement stays positive and specific, and the BCBA adjusts goals as your child masters each step. Parents get regular updates and ideas for practicing at home, at the park or during playdates.

How do I know if my school-age child could benefit from ABA?

Some children are diagnosed early; others reach school before the challenges become clear. Signs that ABA may help a school-age child include frequent notes from the teacher about behavior, trouble joining peers at recess, distress when routines change, rigid interests that crowd out other activities, or homework battles that end in meltdowns most nights.

Insurance usually requires an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis to cover ABA. If your child has not been evaluated, a developmental pediatrician or child psychologist can assess them. If there is a diagnosis but no prior ABA, a BCBA assessment will show which skills to target first.

Older children often take an active part in their own goals. Your BCBA can explain the plan in terms your child understands, build in choices and pick reinforcement that fits their interests. That respect for the child's voice makes the work more effective and more comfortable.

When does center-based or in-home ABA make more sense?

Children who need many hours of structured teaching often start with Full-Day Center-Based ABA at our center, about 4.1 miles from Haddonfield on Route 70 in Cherry Hill. Home sessions are a better fit for goals tied to family routines. Your BCBA will recommend a mix after the assessment.

We serve the surrounding area too, including Cherry Hill, Collingswood and Haddon Township. When you are ready, contact us.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can your therapists come into my child's school?

Often, yes, but it requires the school district's approval and depends on your insurance. With your permission, we contact the school team, explain what our RBT and BCBA would do and coordinate so support fits the classroom routine. Every district handles outside providers a little differently.

Is ABA only for young children?

No. ABA is often associated with toddlers, but school-age children benefit from it too, especially for social skills, independence, coping with frustration and classroom behavior. Goals simply shift to match your child's age and what their days actually look like. Teens and preteens can also work on goals like self-advocacy and daily independence.

How is ABA different from the services in my child's IEP?

IEP services come from your school district and focus on access to education. ABA through health insurance is a medical treatment based on a BCBA's assessment and plan, and it can cover home and community goals as well as school. Many children receive both, and coordinating them avoids mixed messages.

How far is Haddonfield from your center?

Our center at 1939 NJ-70 in Cherry Hill is about 4.1 miles from Haddonfield. Center-based full days happen there. School, community and in-home sessions take place in Haddonfield itself, so many families need to visit the center only for the parts of the plan that call for it.

Do you run social skills groups?

Social skills are a core part of our programs, and group practice at the center gives children chances to use them with peers. Ask about current groups and how they would fit your child's plan when you call. Your BCBA decides the format based on your child's goals.

Who oversees my child's care?

A supervising BCBA designs and monitors your child's plan, and Clinical Director Charles Knoppel, BCBA, oversees every treatment plan at Innovative ABA. BCBA and RBT credentials are issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Because caseloads are kept small, your BCBA knows your child personally and is easy to reach when something comes up at school or at home.

Can ABA help with homework and after-school routines?

Yes, when they are a real source of stress. Your BCBA can break homework time into manageable steps, build in breaks your child can ask for and reinforce effort and completion. These goals usually happen through in-home sessions, and parent training helps you keep the routine going on days without therapy.
