What is school and community-based ABA?
School and community-based ABA is Applied Behavior Analysis delivered where your child actually needs to use their skills. In school, a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) supports your child in the classroom or during transitions, lunch and recess. In the community, sessions happen at places like a playground, library, grocery store, restaurant or doctor's waiting room. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) writes and supervises the plan.
The reason is generalization. A child may ask for help perfectly at home or at our center but freeze in a noisy classroom. Practicing in the real setting, with support that fades over time, helps skills hold up when it counts. The goal is always more independence, not a permanent shadow.
School-based sessions require approval from your school district, and policies differ from district to district. We will be upfront about what is possible in your child's school.
Community sessions are planned around the outings that matter to your family. If grocery runs are the hardest part of your week, that is where we start. If your child struggles at haircuts, dentist visits or family gatherings, your BCBA can build a step-by-step plan, often starting with short, easy visits and building up.

Which children benefit from ABA at school or in the community?
This program fits children who are already making progress at home or at the center but struggle to show those skills in busier places. It also helps children who are starting preschool or kindergarten, changing schools or classrooms, or having behavior at school that makes it hard to learn. For families who avoid outings because of meltdowns or safety worries, community sessions can make everyday errands possible again.
Most children in this program also receive in-home ABA therapy or attend our full-day center-based ABA program. School and community sessions extend that work, so the same goals are practiced in more places with more people.
Children who are preparing for a new school year often benefit from practice before the first day: visiting the building, walking the route from drop-off to the classroom, rehearsing lunch routines and using a visual schedule. Your BCBA can build those steps into the plan so the first weeks feel more familiar.
Younger children moving out of NJ Early Intervention at age 3 are a common group in this program. Our early intervention ABA program helps prepare toddlers for that change, and school-based support can continue the work once preschool starts.
How does school-based ABA work with my child's IEP and Child Study Team?
In New Jersey, children 3 and older who need special education are evaluated by their district's Child Study Team, which writes an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP is the school's plan. Our ABA treatment plan is a separate, insurance-funded plan. They work best when they point in the same direction.
With your written permission, your BCBA can share data, suggest strategies, attend meetings or observe your child at school. We often help parents prepare for IEP meetings by explaining which skills are emerging and which supports seem to help. Whether our therapist can work inside the school day depends on district policy, and in some cases the district provides its own behavior support instead. We help you work through those options.
Districts we may work with include Cherry Hill Public Schools and others across South Jersey. In Pennsylvania, school supports follow the state's own special education process, and Medical Assistance can fund some school and community ABA through Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS).
If your child is in a Pennsylvania school, the same idea applies: the school's plan and the ABA plan are separate but should support each other. Your BCBA can coordinate with the school team there too, with your written permission.
How do school and community sessions work, step by step?
Like all our programs, this one starts with data. We often have openings and can start quickly, so ask about current availability.
Safety comes first in every community session. Before a new outing, your BCBA reviews the plan with you, including what to do if your child becomes upset or tries to run. Sessions start small and grow only as your child shows they are ready.

Where do you provide school and community ABA?
We provide school and community ABA across South Jersey, including Camden, Burlington, Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties, plus Ocean County and the Philadelphia region. Parents remain central. Our parent training & support program teaches you how to handle outings and school-related challenges yourself, and our social skills program targets the play and conversation skills that matter most at recess and lunch.
We are honest about distance. Our only center is in Cherry Hill, so families farther away receive in-home, school and community sessions rather than center days. Scheduling depends on therapist availability in your area, and we will tell you what is realistic on the first call.

Frequently asked questions
Can an ABA therapist go to school with my child?
Sometimes. It depends on your school district's policies and approval. Some districts allow a privately funded RBT in the classroom; others prefer to use their own staff or limit outside providers to observation. With your permission, we contact the school, explain the plan and work toward an arrangement that supports your child.
Is school-based ABA the same as an IEP?
No. An IEP is the school district's special education plan, written by the Child Study Team in New Jersey. School-based ABA through Innovative ABA is a separate, insurance-funded treatment plan written by a BCBA. The two can support each other, and with your permission we share data and ideas with the school team.
What happens during a community ABA session?
Your child's therapist meets you at a real-world place, such as a store, park or library, and practices specific goals there. That might be staying close in a parking lot, waiting in line, asking for an item or tolerating a busy room. The therapist records data and gradually fades support as your child becomes more independent.
Does insurance cover school and community-based ABA?
Many plans cover medically necessary ABA in community settings, and some cover school-based sessions; it depends on the plan and the treatment plan. New Jersey's autism mandate and Pennsylvania's Act 62 require many plans to cover ABA. We verify your benefits for free and tell you clearly what your plan allows.
Will my child always need a therapist at school?
That is not the goal. School and community ABA is designed to fade. As your child shows a skill on their own, the therapist steps back, first physically, then in how often they help. We track independence in the data and plan for your child to manage with the supports the school already has.
Can you attend my child's IEP meeting?
With your written permission, your BCBA can share progress data, provide a summary or, when scheduling allows, join the meeting. Even when we cannot attend, we help you prepare by explaining what your child is working on, which strategies help and what questions to ask the Child Study Team.
Do you provide school-based ABA in Cherry Hill?
We support families across Cherry Hill and Camden County, including children who attend Cherry Hill Public Schools, but any in-school sessions depend on district approval. When school sessions are not possible, community and in-home ABA can still target classroom skills, and your BCBA can share strategies with the school team with your permission.
