When should a Voorhees family think about ABA for a toddler?
Many parents first notice something in the second or third year: few words, not responding to their name, lining up toys, very big reactions to small changes. Your pediatrician may suggest an autism evaluation, and that is the right next step. A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder from a developmental pediatrician or psychologist is usually what insurers require before they cover ABA.
You do not have to wait for the diagnosis to talk with us. A free call helps you understand what ABA involves for a two- or three-year-old, which is mostly play-based teaching of communication, imitation, joint attention and daily routines. Our Early-Stage Support & Prevention program is built for exactly this age.
What happens when my child ages out of NJ Early Intervention at 3?
New Jersey's Early Intervention System, run by the Department of Health, serves children from birth to age 3. At 3, responsibility shifts to your school district, which evaluates through its Child Study Team and, if your child qualifies, writes an IEP that may include a preschool disabilities program.
That handoff can leave a gap. Early Intervention services end, the district process takes time, and the hours a preschool class offers may not match what your child needs. Medically necessary ABA through your health insurance is separate from both systems, so it can start alongside the transition or fill hours outside the school day.
If your child is turning 3 soon, call before the transition rather than after. We can complete the assessment and insurance authorization while the district evaluation is underway.
Is the Cherry Hill center practical from Voorhees?
For most Voorhees families, yes. The center sits about 3.4 miles from Voorhees on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, close enough that a full program day fits a normal routine. Our Full-Day Center-Based ABA program gives younger children what home sometimes cannot: other kids to practice with, a predictable classroom-style schedule and an RBT team focused only on your child's goals.
If your child is very young, naps on a set schedule or does better in familiar surroundings, In-Home ABA Therapy in Voorhees is a good starting point. Some families begin at home and move to center days as their child gets ready for a more structured setting.
Does insurance cover ABA for toddlers in Voorhees?
In many cases it does. New Jersey's 2009 autism mandate requires many state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary behavioral treatment, including ABA. Plans offered by large employers that self-fund their coverage follow federal rules instead, so two families on the same street can have very different benefits.
That is why our first step is a free insurance check. We confirm whether ABA is covered, whether a prescription or referral is needed and what authorization looks like for your plan. We accept most major plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare.
Public coverage can also pay for ABA for eligible children in general, and state Early Intervention is a separate benefit altogether. If you are unsure which applies to your toddler, call and we will sort it out with you. Read about the wider area on our Camden County page, or contact us online.
How does ABA teach very young children?
For a toddler, ABA rarely looks like sitting at a table. Your child's BCBA designs goals from a skills assessment, and RBTs teach them through natural environment teaching inside play, snack and songs, with short bursts of discrete trial training for skills that need extra repetition. Reinforcement is tailored to what your child actually loves.
Every session is recorded with data, so the BCBA can see which strategies are working and change the ones that are not. Parents learn the same techniques through Parent Training & Support, which matters most at this age because so much learning happens at home.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Innovative ABA from Voorhees?
Our center at 1939 NJ-70 in Cherry Hill is about 3.4 miles from Voorhees in a straight line. It is the closest and only center we operate. Families who prefer to stay home can choose in-home ABA in Voorhees instead, or combine home sessions with center days.
What age can my child start ABA therapy?
ABA can begin as soon as a child has a diagnosis and an assessed need, and many children start as toddlers. There is no single right age, but research consistently supports starting early when possible. Your BCBA will tailor goals and hours to your child's age and development.
Can my child get ABA and NJ Early Intervention services at the same time?
Often, yes. NJ Early Intervention is a state program for children under 3, while ABA through private insurance is a separate medical benefit. Many families use both. We coordinate with your Early Intervention providers when you give permission so goals do not conflict.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Bring your child's diagnostic report if you have one, your insurance card, any Early Intervention or IEP documents, and a list of what worries you most. A favorite snack or toy helps too. The BCBA will use all of it during the assessment to write a plan that fits your child.
Will my toddler have the same therapist every time?
That is our goal. We keep a small, steady team around each child, and young children in particular build trust faster with familiar faces. Your supervising BCBA also stays the same, so you have one clinician who knows your child's history and progress.
Do you serve other towns near Voorhees?
Yes. We work with families across Camden County, including Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, Berlin and Gloucester Township, and with Burlington County families just past the Evesham line. In-home coverage depends on your exact location and our current schedule, so call to confirm for your street. Center-based care for every town happens at our Cherry Hill location.
Can ABA help if my child only has a speech delay?
It depends on the reason for the delay. Insurance coverage for ABA usually requires an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, while a speech delay on its own is often treated by a speech-language pathologist. A developmental evaluation sorts out which services fit. If autism is diagnosed, ABA and speech therapy often work well side by side.
