Should we choose in-home ABA or center days from Jackson?

Jackson sits on the western side of Ocean County, about 35 miles from our Cherry Hill center, which makes it the closest Ocean County town we serve. For most Jackson children, In-Home ABA Therapy is still the main model. But because the distance is a bit shorter, we talk with more Jackson families about a hybrid plan.

A hybrid plan might mean in-home sessions most of the week, plus one or more days at our Full-Day Center-Based ABA program for structured group learning and peer practice. It is not right for every child or every work schedule. Our BCBA will lay out the tradeoffs and you decide.

  • In-home firstbest for daily living skills, family routines and children who are new to therapy
  • Center daysuseful for group instruction, peer play and getting ready for a classroom
  • Hybridone BCBA, one treatment plan, the same goals in both settings

My child is about to turn 3. What changes?

In New Jersey, the state Early Intervention System, run by the Department of Health, serves children from birth to age 3. As your child nears 3, Early Intervention services end and responsibility moves to your school district. For Jackson families, that means the Jackson School District's Child Study Team, which evaluates whether your child qualifies for preschool special education and an IEP.

That transition can feel abrupt. ABA can provide continuity through it. Our Early Intervention ABA work focuses on communication, play, imitation and following simple directions, the building blocks a preschool classroom expects. Our BCBA can also help you prepare for IEP meetings by sharing data on what your child can already do.

What happens in the first month of ABA?

First, a free consultation and a free insurance benefits check. Next, a BCBA assessment: we watch your child play, talk with you about routines, and run a structured skills assessment. If challenging behavior is a concern, we add a functional behavior assessment to understand why it happens.

The BCBA then writes a treatment plan with specific goals and submits it to your insurer for authorization. Once approved, an RBT begins regular sessions. Early sessions focus on building rapport, because children learn best from people they trust and enjoy. You will start parent training in that first stretch too, so you can use the same strategies all week.

What if the morning drive to Cherry Hill is not realistic every day?

Then do not plan around it. Center days are a choice, not a requirement. Jackson is about 35 miles from our center as the crow flies, and for working parents, a daily round trip can be the thing that makes a good plan fall apart. A treatment plan only works if your family can keep it up week after week.

Many Jackson families start fully in-home and revisit the question later. As a child builds skills like sitting for short activities, following group directions or tolerating new places, the BCBA may suggest trying a center day or two for peer practice and classroom readiness. Others never need the center at all and move into community and social goals from home.

Whatever you choose, the clinical side stays the same: one Board Certified Behavior Analyst responsible for your child's plan, consistent RBTs, data collected every session, and oversight from our Clinical Director, Charles Knoppel, BCBA. Location changes the setting, not the standard of care.

How common is autism, and is it worth starting early?

The CDC's ADDM Network estimates that about 1 in 31 eight-year-olds in the surveillance areas were identified with autism in 2022, and New Jersey has consistently had some of the highest identification rates among ADDM sites. In other words, you are far from alone.

Research on ABA generally supports starting as early as possible, while a child's brain is developing quickly. That does not mean it is too late for an older child. It means that if you have concerns, there is no reason to wait for a perfect moment. A consultation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can my child do both in-home ABA and center days?

Yes. Some Jackson families combine in-home sessions with days at our Cherry Hill center, about 35 miles away. One BCBA oversees both settings under a single treatment plan, so goals stay consistent. Whether a hybrid plan makes sense depends on your child's needs, your schedule and your insurance authorization.

Do you have a center in Jackson or Ocean County?

No. Innovative ABA has one center, at 1939 NJ-70 in Cherry Hill. In Jackson and the rest of Ocean County, we provide ABA mainly in the home, with community and school-based sessions where they fit your child's goals. Families who want structured center days can enroll in Cherry Hill.

Can ABA continue after Early Intervention ends at age 3?

Yes. ABA through your health insurance is separate from New Jersey's Early Intervention System, so it can continue after your child turns 3. Many families use ABA alongside preschool services from their school district. We can help coordinate goals with the district's Child Study Team.

Who will be working with my child?

A Registered Behavior Technician delivers most sessions, supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who writes and updates the plan. We keep the same RBTs with your child whenever possible. Our Clinical Director, Charles Knoppel, BCBA, oversees every treatment plan. You can meet the team at your free consultation and ask how supervision works for your child.

Will insurance pay for ABA in Jackson?

Many plans will. New Jersey's autism mandate requires many state-regulated plans to cover medically necessary ABA; self-funded employer plans follow federal rules. We accept Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Tricare, UnitedHealthcare and most major plans, and we verify benefits for free, including any prior authorization your plan needs.

Do you serve other Ocean County towns?

Yes, including Toms River, Lakewood and Brick Township. Those towns are farther from Cherry Hill than Jackson, so families there rely even more on in-home and community ABA. Our Ocean County ABA therapy page covers how we serve the whole county.
