Is there an ABA center in Toms River, or does therapy come to us?
We want to be straight with you from the first call: Innovative ABA has one center, and it is on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, about 41 miles from Toms River. We do not have an Ocean County office. For most Toms River families, therapy comes to you through our In-Home ABA Therapy program.
That is not a second-best arrangement. Home is where many of the skills that matter most actually happen: getting dressed, sitting for dinner, handling a sibling taking a toy, transitioning off a tablet. Teaching those skills where they occur means less work later to carry them over from a clinic room to real life, which behavior analysts call generalization.
If your child would benefit from a structured full day with peers, our Full-Day Center-Based ABA program in Cherry Hill is open to Toms River families who choose to make the trip. Some families do center days and home sessions in the same week. We will talk through what is realistic for your schedule before anything is set.
How does in-home ABA work for a Toms River family?
It starts with an assessment led by a BCBA. We observe your child at home, talk with you about daily routines, and use a skills assessment, along with a functional behavior assessment when challenging behavior is part of the picture. From there the BCBA writes an individualized treatment plan with clear, measurable goals.
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) then works with your child at home on a consistent weekly schedule. Sessions blend discrete trial training for focused skill practice with natural environment teaching built into play and routines. The RBT records data every session, and the BCBA reviews that data, visits sessions and adjusts the plan as your child progresses.
- Same faceswe keep the same RBTs with your child session to session whenever we can, because trust drives learning
- Low caseloadsour BCBAs carry fewer cases, so supervision is hands-on, not a monthly sign-off
- You are part of itparent training & support is built in, so strategies keep working between sessions
What does a week of in-home ABA look like in Toms River?
Every plan is different, but here is a realistic picture. Your RBT arrives at the same times each week, often after school for school-age children or in the morning for preschoolers. A session might open with a few minutes of play to warm up, move into short bursts of focused practice on communication or self-care goals, and then shift to teaching inside a real routine, like asking for a snack or putting shoes on before going outside.
Throughout, the RBT records data on each goal. Every so often, the BCBA joins a session in person to watch, coach the RBT and talk with you. Once or more a month, depending on your plan, you will sit down with the BCBA to look at the numbers together: which skills are climbing, which are flat, and what changes next. If a challenging behavior spikes after a move, a new sibling or a school change, the BCBA adjusts the plan rather than waiting for a scheduled review.
Because Toms River is about 41 miles from our center, we plan scheduling carefully so your child sees a consistent team rather than whoever happens to be free that day. Consistency is a promise we take seriously at any distance.
Can ABA help my child at school in Toms River?
Yes, where the school agrees. Our School & Community-Based ABA program can support a child in the classroom or practice skills in community settings like a store or library. School-based support depends on the district's approval, so we coordinate with the school team rather than assume access.
If your child attends Toms River Regional Schools and has, or may need, an IEP, the district's Child Study Team handles evaluations for children 3 and older. ABA goals at home can line up with IEP goals so your child hears one consistent message. Bring your IEP to the consultation and our BCBA will look at where home and school can reinforce each other.
Will insurance cover ABA therapy for my child in Toms River?
Often, yes. New Jersey's 2009 autism insurance mandate requires many state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary behavioral interventions such as ABA. Self-funded employer plans follow federal rules instead, so coverage varies. That is why we run a free benefits check before you commit to anything.
We accept most major plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare. Most plans need a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder from a developmental pediatrician, psychologist or similar specialist, and many require prior authorization. We handle the authorization paperwork and tell you what your plan covers in plain language.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Toms River?
No. Our only center is at 1939 NJ-70 in Cherry Hill, about 41 miles from Toms River. Toms River children are served mainly through in-home ABA, with school and community sessions where they fit. Families who want full center days can enroll in our Cherry Hill program and combine it with home sessions.
How soon can in-home ABA start in Toms River?
It depends on insurance authorization and therapist availability in your part of Ocean County. We often have openings and can start quickly, but we will give you an honest answer about current availability when you call. The steps are a free consultation, a benefits check, a BCBA assessment, then a set weekly schedule.
What ages do you work with?
We work with young children through school age. For toddlers, our early intervention ABA approach focuses on communication, play and early learning. Children under 3 in New Jersey may also qualify for the state Early Intervention System, and ABA can work alongside those services.
How many hours of ABA will my child need?
There is no single number. The BCBA recommends hours after the assessment, based on your child's goals, age and needs, and your insurance plan must approve them. In-home programs range from a few focused sessions a week to more intensive schedules. We review the hours as progress data comes in.
Do I have to be home during sessions?
For in-home ABA, a parent or adult caregiver needs to be home during sessions. You do not have to sit in the room the whole time, but we encourage you to watch and join in. Parent participation is one of the strongest predictors that new skills will stick between sessions.
Do you serve nearby Ocean County towns too?
Yes. We also work with families in Lakewood, Brick Township, Jackson Township and other towns across the county, using the same in-home model with BCBA supervision and consistent RBTs. See our Ocean County ABA therapy page for how we serve the area and what to expect from here.
